Drupal 6 - Is it REALLY worth upgrading from 5.x?

The recent[ish] major release of the top-rated Open Source CMS Drupal probably had some folks wondering if it was really worth the hassle of an upgrade... Well, in a nutshell, yes, it most definitely IS. Drupal 6 is a much better CMS all around, with some key features which past users could have only prayed for [or added to the Drupal 'Requested Features' list, even].

Initially, you don't see a world of difference between 5.x and 6 - and I suppose that's just as well, because who would want their production site radically changed by a CMS upgrade? Users certainly would be confused...

I tested a straight-outta-the-box install of Drupal 6, just to get an initial feel of the new version - and I was very impressed indeed. Key among the new functionality is the automatic upgrade feature which details any upgrades available for any installed Drupal modules... a bit like Ubuntu does with it's software packages. It's a great feature, and should take a LOT of pain out of keeping up to date with those important security fixes...

Next step will be a test of a full upgrade of a working site from 5.x to 6 - and any pitfalls or fallovers will get documented here.

But for now, my advice is to go with Drupal - the joy of six!
